Saas-Fee is a charming resort in the Swiss Alps, often referred to as the "smaller cousin" of the famous Zermatt. Like Zermatt, it is located at the terminus of a river valley, surrounded by towering peaks averaging around 3,000 meters, making further passage impossible. Skiing in Saas-Fee is a unique experience. Situated at an altitude of 1,800 meters with ski slopes reaching up to 3,500 meters, this resort guarantees excellent snow conditions, with glacier skiing possible even until July.

While the number and difficulty of slopes may not challenge advanced skiers for more than 5-7 days, the area is perfect for intermediate and beginner skiers. Snowboarders and freestyle enthusiasts will also find plenty to enjoy, with dedicated facilities and terrain. Though the infrastructure isn’t the newest, it is adequate and well-suited for visitors seeking alpine adventures. For detailed information about slopes and other activities, the Saas-Fee/Saastal website is an excellent resource.
One highlight is the Drehrestaurant Metro-Alpin, located at 3,500 meters, which holds the title of the highest revolving restaurant in Europe. This is no ordinary dining spot—it’s a full-service restaurant where guests can enjoy a meal while marveling at the spectacular views of four 4,000-meter peaks in their full glory. It’s an unforgettable experience to savor both the altitude and the cuisine.

A Car-Free Alpine Paradise
Like Zermatt, Saas-Fee is a car-free resort, which adds to its charm. However, unlike Zermatt, where vehicles must be left several kilometers away, Saas-Fee offers a convenient parking facility right at the village entrance, just a 10-minute walk from the center. The parking structure is impressive, with 12 levels, surveillance cameras, a control room, and elevators—modern infrastructure that ensures the resort remains free of car congestion.
The absence of gas- and diesel-powered vehicles gives Saas-Fee a unique holiday atmosphere. Strolling through the quaint streets of the resort is a delight, offering a peaceful and picturesque setting that maintains the charm of a traditional mountain village. Without the clutter of cars, it’s hard to imagine how the narrow streets could accommodate the influx of vehicles brought by tourists.

Après-Ski and Nightlife
Saas-Fee offers a lively après-ski and nightlife scene, albeit more modest than some of its Swiss counterparts. We enjoyed the atmosphere at spots like Muhle, Nesti’s, Black Bull, and Ski Hütte, where music—typical of German-influenced après-ski culture—set the tone for the fun. Many of the hits were familiar from resorts like Sölden or St. Anton in Austria. Guests danced in their ski boots, drank beer, and fully embraced the lively mountain spirit. However, unlike resorts such as Verbier, the excitement begins to wind down around 7 PM.
After dinner, the party continues at hot spots like Popcorn and Living Room near Hotel Dom, popular with younger crowds and snowboarders, or Crazy Night and Vernissage near hotels Metropol and Ferienart Resort & Spa, which cater to couples and more mature visitors.
The village center is not overly flashy but provides a variety of options for restaurants, cafes, and shops. The range of stores, including those focused on high-quality sports equipment and stylish mountain fashion, is a definite plus compared to Austrian resorts.

A Family-Friendly Destination
Saas-Fee is a top-tier destination with a spectacular landscape featuring peaks over 4,000 meters and a ski domain ranging from 1,800 to 3,500 meters. While it caters primarily to intermediate and beginner skiers, the resort offers plenty to keep everyone entertained. Its cozy restaurants, sufficient shopping options (with a touch of fashion), and lively après-ski scene make it a well-rounded destination.
The area is particularly family-friendly, with a wide array of activities for children and teenagers. In addition to ski schools, there’s an ice rink, a wellness center, and a snow park, ensuring plenty of options for younger visitors. Services are generally good, though you shouldn’t expect over-the-top pampering as a customer.
Saas-Fee’s visitors are predominantly German- and Dutch-speaking, though English, French, Italian, and even Russian can be frequently heard, reflecting the resort’s international appeal.
In summary, Saas-Fee is a spectacular destination that combines breathtaking scenery, a solid ski area, delightful dining, and a warm village atmosphere. Whether you’re skiing, exploring, or simply soaking in the alpine charm, Saas-Fee offers an unforgettable mountain experience.
